Sunil Hails His 'No-Brainer' Decision

Friday 9th May 2008

Sunil Gavaskar believes his decision to relinquish the International Cricket Council's Cricket Committee chairmanship was "a no-brainer" in order to fulfil his media commitments.

The Indian legend resigned from his position on the ICC's influential panel on Wednesday after chairing their annual two-day meeting earlier this week.

Gavaskar was effectively forced to chose between his media career and his role with the ICC after concern within the game's governing body that his dual roles had posed a conflict of interest.

"The ICC position was an honorary one, so it was a no-brainer that I would opt for my professional commitments," Gavaskar told Mid-Day from London on Thursday, just hours after the news of his resignation was released by the ICC.

Gavaskar was due to commentate on matches during the current Indian Premier League, however he had to forgo that commitment to chair the committee meeting.

And the 58-year-old expressed his gratitude to his media employers for allowing him to attend to his ICC responsibilities despite the clash of dates.

"The TV companies are paying good money and it is not fair on them for me to go missing for a few days," he said.

"I had to go to Kuala Lumpur during (India's tour of) Australia and now had to miss a few IPL games."
