A world-record effort from West Indian tail-ender Ravi Rampaul was not enough to stave off victory at the hands of India in Friday's second one-dayer in Visakhapatnam.

Virat Kohli's century and Rohit Sharma and a complementary 90 not out saw to it that Rampaul's swashbuckling effort down the order was upstaged, with the hosts winning by five wickets to take a two-nil lead in the five-match series.

The left-handed Rampaul cracked the highest ever score by a number 10 batsman in ODI cricket as the Windies reached 269 for nine after being stuck into bat by home captain Virender Sehwag.

While Pakistani Mohammad Amir's 73 not out against New Zealand in 2009 was ultimately orchestrated across a losing cause, Rampaul's show-stopping 86 not out kept the Windies in a contest they seemed very much out of after falling to 170 for nine.

The hard-hitting left-hander was merciless in his approach, carting six sixes and as many fours during his 66-ball stay at the crease. Number 11 Kemar Roach, meanwhile, stood firm with an unbeaten 24 - a mere pittance, really, in a 10th-wicket stand to the tune of 99 unbroken runs.

Ultimately, though, it was not to be for a hopeful West Indian unit. Sniping through the relatively early wickets of Sehwag, Parthiv Patel and Gautam Gambhir, the visiting team then endured an authoritative 163-run alliance between centurion Kohli and sidekick Sharma. The duo moved through 28.4 overs at a rapid rate, cashing in on a torrid day in the field for the Windies, who spilled as many as four catches.

There was little halting the talented duo, with Kohli particularly impressive en route to the eight ODI ton of his burgeoning career. The deal was all but sealed when he fell for 117 - one run shy of the 118 he landed against Australia at the same venue a couple of years ago.

With Man of the Match Kohli back in the hut and Suresh Raina undone by a short ball for a first-ball duck, there was still some work for Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja to do in the face of a pressing asking rate. The duo, true to form, tucked into triumph with 11 deliveries to spare.

Earlier Ravichandran Ashwin, prolific against England and again at the top of his game in last month's Test series against the men from the Caribbean, proved human after all after copping expensive figures of one for 74 from his 10 overs.

Lendl Simmons was the lone rose amid an otherwise thorny top order. The talented opener, who inexplicably took a back seat to the inadequate Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell in the Test series, continued his fine stretch of form in ODI competition en route to 78 from 102 deliveries.

His, other than Rampaul's effort, was the only meaningful contribution across an ACA-VCA Stadium pitch primed for big runs. Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Varun Aaron joined Ashwin in his day to forget in travelling for 66 runs across his 10 wicketless overs.

The third ODI gets underway in Ahmedabad on Monday.
